The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem, the capital city.

It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entrance is below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists were present at a celebration to inaugurate the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Around NIS 25 million was put into in the project, budgeted by Elkin's ministry The Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, and the work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the vision of shifting the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem. Elkin stated that the new tunnel connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved throughout its different areas. It will also help cyclists and promote green transportation in the capital.

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewer of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. The plant is located west of Sorek and is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel.
